I’ve long been a proponent of the idea that social media marketing, or trying to make sales through “the social media channel” is a beyond a waste of time… it is driving potential business away, never to return. And for everyone’s sanity, including my own, I still feel that way! This past weekend at BarCamp Memphis, I had the opportunity to have some extended discussions that included this very topic. One blog owner was very concerned about having any advertising on their site saying they had made a huge investment gaining the trust of their readership and didn’t want to risk that by selling ads. At the same time, there has to be a viable revenue model or many sites, including some pretty popular ones, will not be able to continue. Well, maybe there is a way…

It may seem like a silly question. Most folks are pretty adept at answering the question, “What do you do?” But this weekend at BarCamp Memphis, one of the conversations I got into tossed around the question and what the right answer should be. Its something that I’ve struggled with and I bet others have too… especially when trying to explain to mom what it is you do!

TEDx is a new program that enables local communities such as schools, businesses, libraries, neighborhoods or just groups of friends to organize, design and host their own independent, TED-like events.

It all came about in pretty short order. I think I found out about TEDxHuntsville on Wednesday night, probably through a LinkedIn post. So what did I do… I tweeted it of course!

Welcome to TEDxHuntsville
The event was this past Sunday at Cre8ive Partners in downtown Huntsville. Their offices were Awesome! Exposed brickwork and rafters with a huge glass top over former mortise and tenon beamwork for a conference table. Wow… just wow!
