Hey Carmen, thanks for the comment and the links! I will definitely check them out. I was looking through Cody's site following up on his comments and he mentioned The 4-Hour Work Week... so I went and picked it up yesterday. Several folks have talked about it, so I figured it was time I read it. Sat down with it last night and couldn't put it down! Made it about 1/4 way through it already!

One of the things that I'm seeing as key to making this work is breaking down some artificial barriers that we put up for ourselves, especially geography. I've moved around a little in my professional career, even had offices in more than one city at the same time, but so many people I talk to never even consider the thought of "not being here."

Probably the single greatest anchor that keeps people weighed down is the encumbrance of "stuff", you know, all that crap we accumulate because we are conditioned to believe that the more stuff we have the more successful we must be or the happier we will be. It has been my experience that nothing could be farther from the truth. One of the happiest times in my life was when I traveled with two duffel bags that contained everything I owned.

Anyway, I digress. Thanks again for stopping by Carmen. Hope to chat again soon.

@jtrigsby

Best of luck with your pursuits JT. It's amazing to see the explosion of people seeking the nomadic lifestyle. As Cody mentioned below there are several places to visit where people are talking about this revolution. At NuNomad.com we define a "NuNomadic lifestyle" in a similar way - the ability to keep your income generating from your homebase so that you can travel the world indefinitely. I don't normally want to push our stuff on other people's blogs - but we have written a step-by-step "how to" book on how to make this lifestyle happen for yourself called "Quit Dreaming and Go!". We have another one coming out soon. I've been nomadic for about 8 years and am currently in Brazil. My NuNomad partner, Ricardo has been on the road close to 15 and has most recently been living in Thailand although he's currently returned to the states to renew a visa. I travel with my 3 kids - Richard travels alone. There are a lot of variations on the theme out there and nomads are a fascinating group to get to know!

Hey Lea, thanks for stopping by!

I really found out about Zoho after using Google docs for quite a while. I really like how comprehensive Zoho is even including kind of ancillary apps like invoicing and CRM. I also really like the feature that lets you add other web apps as a tab on your dashboard... and then Google Docs added the same feature.

If I were one that worried about giving Big G the keys to all my docs or worried about everything being in one place thus creating a single point of failure, then I could get on board with Zoho. It is certainly as good as Docs if not better in some ways (eg document editing). In the end though, I'm a sucker for simple and docs certainly makes it simple.

As I'm writing this I'm reminded of a saying I used to apply to Microsoft all the time... maybe the time is coming to use it on Google. "I'm not their biggest fan, but I sure am a fan of how well all their stuff works together." It is pretty hard to turn your nose to the biggest game in town.

I'll definitely check out your sites. Thanks for the comment, stop by often!

@jtrigsby

Nice post - how do you find Zoho compared with Google??

Another site you might find interesting is the one I run - LocationIndependent.com.

And if you want to connect & network with a load more Digital Nomads/LIPs (location independent professionals), then we also have an online clubhouse at LocationIndependentClub.ning.com which is free to join. I'm sure our community could benefit from your experiences to date :)

Great post! I wish you all the best in your pursuit! DigitalNomads is fantastic, and there are a lot more great folks writing about location independence (follow #LIP on Twitter) like BusinessBackpacker.com, FreePursuits.com, JetSetCitizen.com, and many more. Of course you should stop in and visit me in Bangkok here too sometime— ThrillingHeroics.com ;)
